4WD and Safari Camper package: What to pack?

By | Crikey Blog, FAQ | No Comments

How much space do I have?

A lot! Yes, that’s true! Compared to other 4WD Camper providers, our 4WD and Safari Camper package is generous in space. This set up is one of the safest you will find in Australia, as it allows to spread the weight evenly.

How much space in the 4WD?

  • There is some free space at the back of the 4WD which is usually good for storing your food.
  • There is also space on top of the 4WD (on the roof rack)

How much space in the Camper trailer?

  • There is some space left in the front pods (depending on how many chairs you need).
  • There are compartments and drawers available inside the camper trailer for your personal belongings.
  • Remember your beds remain made so that means less to worry about!
  • The kitchen comes fully equipped for your cooking needs.
  • No need to bring water as the camper trailer comes with an in-built water tank (165 L).
  • The camping table goes inside the camper trailer. Bags, personal items and food can also be stored on top of the table. Basically, the camper trailer has a squared space width of 1.2 m and a height of 44 cm available for storage (not including the camping table).

What should I pack?

We always recommend to travel with soft bags as they are easy to store and don’t take too much space. As our package comes fully equipped, all you need to bring is your clothes and toiletries. We provide a complimentary linen package for hires over 15 days. Under 15 days, it is $100 charge.  At pick up, we will show you where the nearest supermarket is located for your shopping needs. See, it’s that simple to travel in a Crikey Campers!

Power Management with a Crikey camper trailer or caravan

By | FAQ | No Comments

Power management with the off-road camper trailer

Dependant on your travel plans, you are not restricted to powered sites with a Crikey Camper Trailer. All campers are fitted with a 110 amp battery which enables your camper to be used on unpowered sites if required. The battery can last up to 3 weeks when using the lights and the water pump. Please note for any appliances running on 240v, you will need to be at a powered campsite. If you are using a fridge and staying idle for awhile, you can plug the fridge in the 12v outlet of the camper trailer. Please note the battery of the camper will last up to 3 days. In those cases, we recommend hiring a generator.

Power management with a Crikey caravan

All caravans are fitted with a 110 amp battery which enables your caravan to be used to be used on a non powered site. Please note that appliances running on 240V would not run in this situation. This means that the microwave, the A/C or coffee machine or toaster for example cannot be turned on if the caravan is not plugged to 240V. In this case, we would recommend hiring a small generator in order to power those appliances. Each caravan has a couple of gas burners so that you are still able to cook when staying on a non powered site. We would recommend staying on a powered site once a week in order to fully recharge the batteries.

Power Management for the 4WD & Safari Camper package

The beauty of our set up is that you don’t need to stay at powered campsites every night! We would recommend staying at a powered campsite once every two weeks.

The fridge runs off the battery in the car, so as long as you do a certain amount of driving each day or two, the auxiliary battery will recharge as you drive and power the fridge.
If you stay in one place for a while with minimal driving, you will need to monitor the health of the battery. There are 12v sockets in the camper trailer that you can plug the fridge into so you can give the car battery a break. This is a good option for those situations.
There is also a battery voltage monitor in the car and camper trailer so you can see how they are going.

Typically, a full battery (either car or trailer) can run the fridge for approximately 3 days without driving to recharge.

There are 3 batteries in the kit – the cranking (starting) battery in the car, the auxiliary (second) battery in the car and the camper trailer battery.

While driving (moving under load….not just the engine on with the car sitting idle), the car will recharge the batteries, first prioritising the starting battery, then when that’s full it will charge the second battery, and when that’s full it will charge the trailer battery (through the Anderson plug). Around 5 hours of driving should fully charge a flat battery.

Typically, if you are not running the fridge from the trailer, you will have approximately 3 weeks worth of power from that battery, as all you are using is the 12v water pump, recharging the 2 x LED lights we supply, and recharging your own devices such as phone’s, iPads, etc., however these can also be charged in the car as you drive.

There are 12V and USB outlets available in the 4WD & Safari Camper package.

Please note the Anderson plug with the 4WD and Caravan Package does not recharge the batteries of the caravan. The Anderson plug only allows the fridge of the caravan to run while driving. If you stay at a non powered site, the fridge will start running with gas.

Most importantly, if you are staying at campsite and not driving each day or two, you will need to monitor the health of the vehicle’s batteries (cranking and auxiliary) as the fridge will continue drawing power if not turned off. In this case we would recommend using the caravan’s fridge only.

How to choose the right 4WD Camper for your Western Australian road trip

By | FAQ, Gibb River Road | 3 Comments

Ask yourself these 7 essential questions when searching for your 4WD Camper rental!

4WD + Safari Camper Package

1.    What safety features does the car have?

Let’s face it, no ones likes to break down in the middle of nowhere! Make sure you check which recovery gear is included in your 4WD hire.

2.    Is there enough room for your luggage?

The 4WD you’ve been looking at might seem nice and compact but can you fit all your equipment? Think about where you will store your food, clothes, water, bedding, cooking equipment and table and chairs.

3.    Where can you go with your 4WD Camper?

The majority of the Western Australian’s attractions are located via off road access. Make sure you are able to take your 4WD Camper hire where you would like to go!

4.    How many people?

Some 4WD’s seat 2, others 3 and others 5! Explore your options and also make sure that everybody will be comfortable! Hard seats or soft? Access to the rear passenger seats?  Space available in the 4WD? And most importantly, would you like to sleep on sleeping mats or a mattress?

5.    How big is the water tank?

It’s extremely dangerous not to carry enough water. Towns can be very far apart and drinkable water not easily accessible. On average, you should cater for 10 litres per person, per day.

6.  What is included and what costs extra?

Look at the final cost and not the daily rate! A lot of little extra’s can make a cheap rental more expensive that an all-inclusive provider. Think about the table & chairs, child seats, extra drivers’ fees and kilometres.

7.    Liability reduction options?

It’s important to know what’s covered in your 4WD Camper rental and what is not. Companies generally hold a security bond secured via credit card and also offer liability reduction options to reduce your excess.

Feeling confused? Crikey provides you with peace of mind so that you can relax and enjoy your holidays in total comfort! Our 4WD + Safari Camper package is fully equiped and designed for off road adventures such as the Gibb River Road. All you need to bring is your food and clothes!
It’s camping truly made easy!
